Home decorating trends can come and go just as quickly as general fashion trends, but good lighting tends to last a long time. The summer months are a great time of year to experiment with the lighting outside of your house.
Here’s a little bit of information from an electrician in New Milford, CT about some of the hottest outdoor lighting trends for this summer to give you some ideas to tinker with.
Geometric shapes and designs
In past years, we have seen explosions of globe and string lights. Those lights are still going to be very popular on decks and patios at homes, bars and restaurants across the nation, but a new trend has burst on to the scene this year: geometric patterns.
These patterns have also been quite popular in wallpaper this year, and are making their way into the lighting world. You can use lanterns and certain types of lighting fixtures to cast interesting shapes and shadows around your outdoor spaces. You can replace shades on decorative fixtures with wire cages, for example, to create some interesting designs. Fixtures with unique angles and structures are also becoming much more popular.
Pops of color
Pops of color are big in interior design right now as well, especially coming out of trends that made everything white or gray. You can easily incorporate pops of color outside with the lighting you use. If you’re looking to add to the warmth and brightness of your summer outdoor seating areas, try incorporating pastel colors, bright golds and other warm tones. You might also choose to add colored LED bulbs into patio string lights and other decorative fixtures.
If you’re an avid gardener, you can highlight the work you’ve put into your gardens or planters around your property with lighting. You can use small lights or solar LED spotlights at night in some areas, or flood lights to really provide a dramatic wash in others. But most of the time, it won’t take a whole lot of lighting power for you to add some extra elegance in your “green” areas.
Wall grazing is another lighting trend that’s really taken off within the last couple years. If your house has uneven surfaces such as stone, brick or stucco, you can install lights at angles that shine along the surface to create shadows that emphasize the texture of your home. LED flood lights are one of the best tools you can use to accomplish this. Position them near the bottom of the wall to show off its texture.
Lighting for guests’ convenience
Functional lighting will never go out of style. Not only should you use lighting to be welcoming to your nighttime guests, but it is also important for safety. All sidewalks and walkways should be well lit, as should entryways, decks and patios.
